Magnolia Unka-Wool is a senior associate with Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP practicing in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Magnolia is of Chipewyan Dene ancestry and is a member of Deninu K’ue First Nation in the Northwest Territories. Magnolia was called to the bar in Alberta and Northwest Territories in 2009 and in Nunavut in 2014.
Magnolia is currently practicing in the area of indigenous rights and environmental law advising clients on indigenous rights and claims, environmental matters and self-government issues.
Magnolia joined OKT LLP in March 2017 and prior to this she practiced for 7 years at one of Canada’s largest western and northern business law firms in Yellowknife. Magnolia articled at an Aboriginal Law firm in Alberta and stayed on as a practicing lawyer for one year following articles before moving north to Yellowknife.
Magnolia has represented close to 300 residential school claimants over the past 8 years traveling throughout the Northwest Territories, including parts of Alberta, meeting with clients and attending hearings. Magnolia also has experience in general litigation, wills and estates and family law.
Magnolia obtained a law degree in 2008 from the University of British Columbia and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta in 2005 majoring in Native Studies.
Magnolia is the chair of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Aboriginal Law Section for the NWT and a council member on the CBA-NWT Executive. She is also an active member of the CBA-NWT Women Lawyers Forum and Young Lawyers Forum. Magnolia is on the membership committee for the Indigenous Bar Association. Magnolia was a member of the 2016 Truth and Reconciliation Commission Joint Working Group for the Law Society of the Northwest Territories and the Canadian Bar Association NWT Branch.
Magnolia is also actively involved in the community as a board member of the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation in the Northwest Territories and is the chair of the Ecole St. Patrick High School Parent Advisory Committee. She also volunteers with Yellowknife Skating Club and Yellowknife Minor Hockey.
