Chanel Carlson is an Associate at OKT. She is Red River Métis from Treaty 1 territory and the Homeland of the Métis Nation. Her roots extend from York Factory, to Red River, to Batoche.

Chanel has experience working in a variety of legal settings, primarily focusing on Aboriginal law. This work has included litigation, governance support, consultations, specific claims and negotiations. She also has been involved in supporting class members on several class actions intended to compensate for harms inflicted on Indigenous people and communities.

Chanel received her J.D. from the University of Ottawa, where she spent all three years on the Indigenous Law Students Governance – a collective of Indigenous law students which successfully evolved from a student “club” to an Indigenous self-governing body.

She also represented the University of Ottawa at the Kawaskimhon moot, and participated in Osgoode Hall’s Intensive Program in Indigenous Lands, Resources & Governments. Chanel completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba, where she received a B.A. in Criminology, before going on to complete the Native Law Centre Summer Program prior to beginning law school.

After law school, she articled at a large firm in Winnipeg, MB, where she gained experience working in many areas of law including corporate, commercial, administrative, municipal, regulatory, employment, intellectual property, construction and wills & estates.

Chanel is a member of the Manitoba Bar.
