On Thursday, July 11, the Assembly of First Nations, Chiefs of Ontario, Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and Indigenous Services Canada announced a $47.8 billion proposed Final Agreement on long-term reform of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program. This historic settlement significantly surpasses the initial commitment made in 2021 in the Agreement-in-Principle which committed $19.807 billion over five years. First Nations across the country will have the opportunity to attend information sessions before engaging in ratification processes in September.

If ratified, this Agreement provides for $47.8 billion over 10 years which will support stable, flexible, and predictable funding for First Nations across Turtle Island. The Agreement recognizes and supports First Nations as leaders in delivering prevention services and First Nations representatives. There will also be funding adjustments to account for remoteness, population, and inflation.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to OKT’s clients Chiefs of Ontario for working toward this milestone and to the OKT negotiating team that supported them—Maggie Wente, Jessie Stirling, Ashley Ash, and Sinéad Dearman.
