OKT is proud to support Cindy Blackstock and the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada in their campaign to implement Jordan’s Principle.

After Dr Blackstock and the Caring Society won their case at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal against discrimination against on-reserve residents in the provision of social services, the Tribunal ordered Canada to implement Jordan’s Principle by today, May 10, 2016. The Caring Society has designated today as Bear Witness Day.

Sadly, the struggle for Jordan’s Principle goes on, as does the struggle for equality for on-reserve services across a variety of different arenas, including education, water, electricity, fire services … the list is long. Jordan’s Principle is an opportunity for Canada to finally come to honour its Treaty relationship with Indigenous peoples, an opportunity that unfortunately has not been fully taken.

OKT bears witness today to this ongoing struggle and hopes that Canada will not wait much longer to implement Jordan’s Principle.
